AGAIN! I haven't paid the bill for the Overland cars yet. Don't you have cars from some back-water eastern road or Santa Fe that you could release? If you keep bringing out SP equipment you'll just have to release some E7s and PAs to go along with them. Well, if I'm going to dip into the Christmas card money to get these, I guess I earn the right to nitpick. Shouldn't the TNO cars really be "Sunbeam" and not "Daylight" I realize that the majority of Daylight cars were Budd manufactured (I guess that's next month's release) but why no road numbers? Off the top of my head, I can think of 2492, 2493 for the coach and 10201 for the diner. Otherwise, once again they look great. Mark

I've been asking for a Daylight E7 ABB for a long time. But I'll also take a Daylight PA set. EDIT: While we're talking about SP equiptment, how about the Golden State? The red and silver are almost as gorgeous as the Daylight.

Umm... is that it? No sleepers or more coaches? I'm kinda disappointed... I thought when the SP Daylight lightweights were released it would take at least an M note (no longer in circulation I believe) to buy the whole set! But yet again I'm not familiar with what the usual consist included. Maybe MarkM has more expertise on the subject...

Rob: Yeah I got them, but the E9 is somewhat limited: They ran out of LA, generally with E7B helpers and PAs again with E7Bs. bloodynose: There are a number of reasons for such a small number of cars. First they're called Daylight or Sunbeam because they ran during Daylight hours. So there were no sleepers. Second a majority of the cars were Budd and mostly different design from the Zephyr cars. Third the Daylights ran with several unique car types not yet modeled, particularly duplex coaches and triplex dining cars. A good resource is: spdaylight.net/Consist.htmlSo when all is said and done about all that is left are the cars offered. As I recall, the Daylight didn't have any PS baggage cars like these TNO cars, just baggage-car and baggage-RPO. When needed, there were a few Daylight HW baggage cars as offered in the HW Daylight set. Hope this helps, Mark

This release here completes some that may be theoretically been missing, especially as you mentioned RPO. Best, Sven PS: BTW, my favorite web page, your link!!!!

The Daylight RPOs are an interesting item. At this point I have references for regular Baggage RPOs on just two trains: the Shasta Daylight (trains #9, #10) and San Joaquin (trains #51, #52). I also have references for Daylight RPOs on another route I don't recognize (trains 39, #40). The two units offered by AZL ran on the Shasta Daylight. Which is interesting because the large windows used on this train only, changes the letter board paint line. Unlike the models, images indicate Shasta RPO' ran with the narrow letter board: Here's some examples of Daylight consists: www.kls2.com/~karl/rr/sp/Mark

As usual you are the go-to guy for SP and WP knowledge! Now I fully understand the name "Daylight". Even though my favorite railroad is SP, I don't know much about any routes except for the southern route that goes through Arizona, the Sunset Limited and related branches have been my main interest. The daylight interests me I guess because it is SP and the brilliant colors really grab one's attention. I did not want to spend the money for the brass Daylight sets that were still available when I first entered Z scale. Maybe I could get away with 3 or 4 coaches along with one each of the other cars from this release... Thanks, Mark

Mark,
Glad to help out. Although it's difficult to build a prototypically accurate Daylight train unless you run across the AZL brass locomotives and car set, there are still a number of opportunities for the Daylight cars.
My interest in these cars are their use in non-Daylight trains, particularly secondary trains such as the Overland.
There are also the "baby" Daylights, alternate sections of the big name Daylights. For example the Oakland section of the Coast Daylight, a section of just coaches and head-end cars split off from the San Francisco Daylight. Or the Sacramento Daylight, a coaches and diner (lunch counter) section of the San Joaquin Daylight. In Nor Cal there were even a couple of trains that were nothing more than a locomotive and Daylight coach. My knowledge drops off for Southern Cal operations, but I suspect there are similar opportunities.
This brings me to an earlier post when I mentioned trains 39 & 40. Additional research added the name Imperial, a secondary train that ran through Yuma. Since there was an Daylight RPO on this train, it might be worth looking into further.

The AZL run of Daylight cars are heavy on coaches since, as Mark mentioned, this was a day train.
If anyone is interested in one of the sold out brass passenger sets, I have a long time Z scaler considering selling his set. He also has a GS4 that he may part with. I know these were never run. Display pieces only. Contact me offline if you are interested.

For the record there will be no mid-month release for November...
And there was much rejoicing...
BUT, the annual AZL Friday specials start on November 29th... and we have some doozies this time around...
And there was much cursing...
