The grand re-opening of Tomball’s historic 1907 downtown Depot is coming and Mister Dave George’s award winning Z scale “Golden~Blackhawk & Central City Railroad” is a part of the party.
The official ribbon cutting at the Depot is set for Friday, July 20 at 11 a.m. The Depot with all of its new attractions and displays will open to the public beginning Saturday, July 21 for weekend only operation.
New to the Depot museum are:
· Mister Dave’s Golden~Blackhawk & Central City Railroad – a highly detailed Z scale layout that fills the entire freight room of the old 1907 Depot.
· The T&W Model Railway – a 115-square foot O scale model railway created by David George and John Lockwood set inside of the Depot’s caboose and featuring old and new Lionel elements blended into an entertaining display for model railroad buffs of all ages.
· Speeder Maintenance Shed – This display exhibits the Depot’s motorized “speeder” surrounded by tools and other memorabilia that would have been found in a railroad maintenance shed in the mid-1950s. From authentic signage and clothing, to lanterns and items used for track repair and equipment maintenance, the display offers a look back at the blue collar side of railroading.
· The Walden Waiting Room - Ken Walden, the Depot’s original volunteer “Station Agent”, was an incredible illustrator. Since 2007 his original railroad themed drawings had been displayed throughout the building. Now, three years after his death, all of Walden’s works of art have been consolidated into a single gallery where they can be appreciated as a collection.
· The Depot Collection – New pieces have been donated to the depot in recent months and are now on display with other rail related items. Memorabilia from Tomball’s original railroad, the Trinity & Brazos Valley Railway, are exhibited along with pieces from the Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, Frisco, BNSF and others. From pocket watches, pins, model train kits from the 1950s and dinnerware, to date nails from the early 1900s, signal lights and a working telegraph system, Tomball’s historic 1907 Depot is another reason why “Tomball is Texan for Fun!” ®
Tomball is just 28 miles northwest of downtown Houston on FM 2920 at State Highway 249. The Depot is open from noon to 5 p.m. on weekends. There is no charge for admission or parking. For information visit tomballtx.gov, “Tomball Texan for Fun” on Facebook, or call 281-351-5484.
The historic 1907 Depot is a member of the Texas Rail Trail which includes the Rosenberg Railroad Museum, Magnolia Depot Museum and the B-RI Railroad Museum in Teague, Texas.
