Ztrack maintains and keeps updated a Z Scale bolster ID pin ownership chart. What is this you ask? For those in clubs and and who do shows, individuals will paint the bolster pins of their freight cars in order to keep track of them. In cases where cars can get easily mixed together with other individuals cars, these colors help identify the owners. We are the keepers of the chart. We do try to avoid duplication, and will only allow duplication if there is no chance two individuals will run cars together, or if they have an arrangement. Attached is the updated chart. If you would like to claim your bolster pin combination, please email me at rob@ztrack.com or ztrack@aol.com Very important, Ztrack has the no color - no color pin ID combination. So any cars we find laying around without painted bolsters are ours!!! LOL!! Rob Bolster_Pin_ID_Colors_5-2018.xls.pdf (15.48 KB)

Hey! Wait a gosh darn second there Mr. Kluz! It appears that "No Paint / No Paint" has been "assigned" by the powers that be to one "ZTRACK"
Somehow that looks like a back door way for you to claim you own everyone's rolling stock. This will not stand!
I Officially OBJECT!!!! .... now if I can only find someone to listen to my objection ....

Okay, I don't get it. My HO train club runs 4 main tracks, a switcher yard & a round house filled with multiple members' locos & rolling stock. To my knowledge there's never been a need to ID anything other than Digitraxx controllers to keep from grab on the wrong one. We mix & match consists all the time without fear of losing track of our cars. Why would Z be any different? Just saying...

We mix & match consists all the time without fear of losing track of our cars. Why would Z be any different? Just saying... where to start Many of us have identical sets of cars same road names and road numbers. in the event of a derailment / pileup they would be impossible to tell which one belongs to who without the color codes. I'm guessing your club has a permanent layout and weekly or monthly meetings with the same people each time where you can get to know each others stuff. For many of us in Z scale we take our modules out to different shows each time where we connect with others some of whom we may know and others we may be meeting for the first time. As such the odds of everyone knowing what car belongs to who is slim to none. We also have to unpack /setup then tear down and repack everything away for transport each time. It's not like we can just park our consist on the siding till next week, So having several hundred cars that need to be pulled off the track and packed for transport everyone pitches in and helps. Being able to look at the bolster pin color even strangers can figure out this car goes in this guys case and that one goes over there to the other person's box.

So do those belong to Malcolm? What about brass screws? I'll claim brass-brass. Mr. Allbritton: Seems to me that a manufacturer can shoot bolster pins in any color they want. How about Mauve for all future releases?

Hmm, well we may not be running several hundred cars, we do several train shows, festivals & events each year. We tend to coordinate who's running what so we don't duplicate road names & cars. But I see your point...

Hey all! We have had an updated to the Bolster pin assignments. Attached is the revised chart. While it looks like there won't be many shows, if any, this year. Next year if things improve, we are expecting a busy year. So if you are planning on running trains with your club or others, then I encourage you to sign up for a color combo! Just let me know and I will put you down on the chart...

For the rest of use that also use brass screws where paint is not a viable option, I'd assume a small amount of paint on the bottom of the trucks near the bolster hole would be the correct alternative?

The MidweZt HaulerZ use 4 colors. We put a spot of each color on the bottom of the chassis.

It's a great idea!
Waaaayyy back in the day my dad did the molds for light-bright pegs. He used to bring home the test shots with all sorts of crazy colours for us to play with. We were the only kids in the country with 'custom' lightbright colours. Mind you, some weren't very attractive, but cool nonetheless.
