txrfan, Can you please post an overhead view with the track down? Thanks for your posts. Hey Dave, I'll try. The best I might be able to do is an end-shot from high up. The track is roughly kinda hour-glass shaped. Cheers.

I like the central divider that will enable you to create different scenes on either side. Neat layout!

txrfan,
What brand name is the vinyl roadbed? Is it not available any more?

txrfan, What brand name is the vinyl roadbed? Is it not available any more? Hi Dave, Its called Vinylbed it is not made anymore. They manufacture a new product called Flexxbed, for the other scales starting with N and going up in size. Hobby Innovations is the manufacturer/vendor. (Edited to correct Vinylbed/Flexxbed confusion, apologies!!)

I should also add that the central divider is free-standing at the moment. I haven't decided on final placement, but given that, in the photo in my previous post, the tunnel is provisionally located on the 'south' end of the layout, I am inclined to skootch the divider a bit closer to the 'north' end, and fill the area between the portals and the end of the divider with a mountain.
Thoughts?

Keep the tunnel and the divider where they are, and incorporate the two together, with possibly a small stream going down to the left in the pic, and maybe a small bridge near the lower left center. always nice to have a stream crossing!

I was able to hack out some blue foam pieces and get a start on how the terrain might look. As you can see, the 'bottom' or 'south' end of the layout will have a tunnel through a mountain. I'm envisioning the mountain probably rising up to at least the top of the divider and wrapping around both sides. I've also got some smaller 'ridges' or 'lumps' that will be in the curve on the "east" side of the layout, providing the reason the track curves like it does. I'll also have small elevation changes in the corners. Finally, on the 'south' end, I will use another piece of tempered hardboard for the fascia, that will have a hatch for tunnel access - for track cleaning and derailment retrieval.

Here's one more shot...you can also see that I've replaced the tie strips under the rail joiners...first time I've tried this, and it came out pretty well, I think. (You can also see these areas in the photos in the previous post...compare to earlier photos with the glaring gaps in ties...) The terminal joiners were a challenge, as the solder on the bottom didn't allow the ties to slide under at that point and leaving a gap, but once the track is painted and ballasted, that will be nearly unnoticeable.

I have a suggestion for the south/mountain end of your layout. Will you be using the same foam to build your mountain? If so, here's what I did. I made the top of the mountain removable. I cut an opening in the foam on the end so that you could see the train going through the tunnel. I covered that opening with plexiglass that's attached to the removable part of the mountain.

I like the removable mountain top idea, too. You could mount a second rail line on the plexiglass cover (even 3 levels.). If the line at the higher level has the openings offset to the lower portals. A train (or a train and a half) would always remain visible on each side of the mountain. Both UP an BNSF run Bakersville to Mohave on the same mountain. This way, you can model it without grade and elevation changes. If you're doing a mountain, DO a mountain, I always say. ðŸ¤
