I say "jump in". Get some old kits or cheap ones and have a crack at it. I was terrified of bashing at first and I took the plunge with some warehouse loading docks fore an nscale switching puzzle. I even raised the coal bunker on a steam tender to fit a decoder. Putty and styrene scraps are your friend. For me, doing it gave me more ideas and solutions.
Good luck Trey

Don't underestimate Animek products. The finished items are very nice. I too, was concerned about the polybak material, but I really like it. Some construction is a bit complex, but doable if you take your time. The signal towers were surprisingly easy and look great. I also built the coaling tower and I am very impressed with the results. Give it a closer look.

Nice work. It hits all the bells and whistles I want on my layout. Tunnels, bridges, elevation, view blocks and a nice little town/industry.

I still think more than one vote is good thing. Maybe favorite is wrong. I am impressed with all of the AZL freight cars I have. If you are looking for a trend to what people want, then more choices would be good. If not, forget what I said.
Anyway, keep'em coming.

BAZman is correct. The motor will only go in one way. The motor tabs go up. Polarity will be correct. Just go slow and don't force anything.

I have 2 of them. One ran really well and quietly. One was DOA. Micro-trains had no parts, so it was a waste of my money. They do have Maxon motors, so I kept them for parts. Both of mine had failures of the frame tabs that hold the light board. For myself, I am not likely to give the new run a try.

What he said. Any questions, ask here. Lots of people here with many years of experience. Zscale is tiny and likes clean track and wheels. Don't fret if you have issues, the peeps here will find a fix. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Ditto what Dave said. Both of my F7's are horribly noisy. I also had to disassemble and work on them about 8 times before they finally ran reliably. That being said, they pull like bulldozers. Appropriate for the noise they make.
The GP38-2's are in another Galaxy completely. The only real issues really apply to all Z scale. Clean track and locos are an absolute must. The tiny size can make them a bit finicky. AZL also has great customer service. They will support their product.

Don't depend solely on the website. Call or email the source. They sometimes have access to parts not listed online. MTL and AZL have both been very helpful.

Shoot him another email. It takes time, but he will make good. Mine suddenly appeared one day. Maybe he just needs a little reminder.

I use Micro Kristal Clear on structures and vehicles in N and Z scale and like the end product. It worked for my Tichy rotary snow plow. It is easy to use and removable if you don't like it.

I built their sanding tower and was quite pleased. I would not hesitate to buy more if it fit what I wanted.
