So, does anyone have some pictures comparing the BNSF ES44AC and the SD75M? I would like to see some closeups of them together to see the detail difference, paint, handrails, etc. Also, does anyone have an SD75M with the front pilot/snowplow mounted? I just can't stand that open pilot. Thanks for your help.

It does have a pilot. I didn't compare it to the 75M, but I did run it with the Ace, and they are very compatible. The only problem is you can't run the first release 75M with the ES44 if you run dc. The speed difference is too great.

First release of the BNSF were SD75I's and had 2 paint jobs 1st- red warbonnet road # 8276, 8285, and 8294. these are super hard to find. If you do plan on paying $500+ 2nd- Pumpkin H2 road # 8289, and 8292 side note: if you have #8276 PM me it's the only one I'm missing

The very first thing I've done on almost all my AZL diesels is to get rid of that open pilot/AZL truck mounted coupler. In the case of the SD70Ms and -75i, it has been easy to do as my units are of the very first generation, produced in 2006, I guess by Ajin-Korea. On these, truck mounted couplers are very easy to remove because simply clipped on coupler's arm. Then you just have to set pilot/snowplow assembly in place. If, like me, you don't consider to ever come back to truck mounted coupler and open pilot status, you just have to carefully put a few drops of CA glue onto the inside of pilot to shell assembly, and that's it. On more recent and current productions coupler arm and coupler box are only one piece. One has to use cutting pliers and it's very easy as well. Just keep in mind it's a non reversible operation, that perfectly fits to me. For other models, you may find some data here: www.azlforum.com/thread/973/sd70ace-coupler-swapDom

Bought #8294 off eBay about a year ago for around $170 shipped. The Pumpkin SD75I's will be on my list eventually, to use as stand-ins for SD70MAC Iso-cabs, but that would be after these ES44 releases...they are definitely a priority if I end up staying in Z-scale. To Dave's original post, I'm happy with the detail on all of them. I would use the pilots for strategic "always lead" locos, or for close up photography, but otherwise for running I just want to enjoy them as a model train and if they're not perfect I'll survive.
