How do you clean your layout & how often? Just run a track cleaning car & let the rest go? Give it a spring cleaning? I would think the trees can get really dusty! Any tips? I'm a bit of a neat freak.

The methods by which all of us clean our layouts are as varied as the stars in the sky. I use a combination of a track cleaning car pushed by a loco, and a soft piece of rubber with an alcohol soaked cloth wrapped around it. I also wrap the cloth around my re-railer and use the flat end on the track. In as far as trees, buildings and such, I use a hand vacuum where possible but the danger here is if what your cleaning isn't glued or otherwise fastened down, it can be sucked up along with the dust and debris. I found that out the hard way. I have heard that a soft brush like a paint brush can be quite effective in cleaning things other then track. Generally speaking, I only clean my layout once a year except for the track which I clean before each use. The rest of the time, I keep my layout covered when not in use as it is now. It really depends on your own preference and the amount of dust accumulated.

Yeah I wasn't thinking the tracks so much as the layout. We work hard to landscape, creating an environment difficult to clean afterwards.

I vaccum the track first, with a miniature vacuum brush kit: (the small brush on the left, with whatever extension is needed) Then, I "clean", which is really removing oxidation, usually an Aztek car, unless the oxidation is high, then manually with the "fingernail sticks". Then I wipe the rails with a lintless cloth in 99% alcohol. From there on, either the rails are left alone, or a very small amount of anti-oxidant compound. When I use this, normally De-Oxit red. Greg May I ask when you bought the mini vac & attachments?

My layout is modules that I take to train shows. Mother Nature does an excellent job of cleaning them off every time I move them from the house to the car, from the car to the venue and back again. I've also used a portable air tank with an airbrush set at low pressure to blow the dust off. A soft bristle brush works well to clean dust off of roofs.
