Greetings one and all.
I'm new to this forum, but not to z scale. I've been engaged in z, almost since it first started but in the European style. But despite having a fair sized layout I really wasn't satisfied with what Marklin was producing. By that I mean their engines and cars didn't seem to have the detail that one would find on the real thing. I wasn't really disappointed in it, more like it was boring. So I abandoned my European Z and got involved with what is, I think, the best in z scale as far as detail is concerned. So over the past number of years, I've been rebuilding my layout to mimic North American railroads and to my surprise, what is available is far superior to Marklin in as far as variety and detail. I have to say that I'm impressed. Most of my fleet of engines and cars now consists of MTL, AZL, and a few of the others. I have even tried my hand at a few of the kits available. BAD MISTAKE! It's been a very long time since I assembled anything from a kit. I once tried my hand at putting my daughter's bicycle together and ended up with a few extra parts, which to this day, don't know what they belong to. So I leave kit building to someone who really knows what they are doing. Be that as it may, I'm finding I'm getting more satisfaction out of z now because when I run my trains, and watch them from ground level, I find that they look far more realistic than anything Marklin puts out. My interest in the scale is more acute now, and I'm finding it easier to spend more time at working on my layout then ever before. I guess change is a good thing.

Welcome to the forum! I agree kits are a challenge I've built several n scale plastic kit purchased from a local show for only a $1 and practiced paint, assembly, and other techniques I planned on my Z layout, I suggest you pick up a cheap kit in another scale and practice on it, Good luck in your endeavors and again, Welcome to the forum!

I think you'll enjoy this place. Not everyone likes kits and there is no DIY pressure ...here.
Personally, I hope to hear more from such an observant and wise gentleman.

Glad to have you aboard! Observant and wise? Well you'd have to talk to my wife about that. I think she'd be willing to debate you on those points. As for the gentleman, I see no reason to insult me sir. I'm not now, nor have I ever been a gentleman. Just ask any woman
