My question is this; how many trains is enough?
I know that a lot of folks, myself included, are restricted by finances when buying Z-scale trains. To some others, maybe they don't have room to store or run more than X amount of trains. To others, maybe it is getting one of each. And still, maybe some people only want trains that fit into a very specific timeframe or roadname.
I started off in Z-scale with only the intention of being a CB&Q collector/runner. I got the GP7 and Mikado and a fair amount of the CB&Q rolling stock that is available. Then I found a picture of the Marklin Commodore Vanderbilt and thought it was the coolest steam engine. So, the search began for that and then acquiring a handful of AZL Heavyweight cars to pull behind it. Then, my girlfriend said I needed a Christmas train, so I bought a Marklin 81846 set. I spent more than 20 years in Central Nebraska so I am pretty sure I need a BN/BNSF train, so I got the GP30 and about 15 pieces of BN/BNSF rolling stock. The only other loco I am waiting for is the BNSF SD70ACe in Heritage II paint. I will get a couple sets of Coalporters to go with it. After that, I am pretty much done. I believe I need to draw a line somewhere. Unless, or course, someone makes F3's in CB&Q and a matching California Zephyr corrugated set (of course, they need to be made from polished stainless steel).
I find myself always wanting to acquire another piece of rolling stock or another loco. Is this happening to other folks or are you content with what you have? The responsible part of me knows that if I ever need to liquidate or move to another scale (because of eyesight, for example), I will lose a fair amount of money when reselling what I have. I realize that certain pieces have a very good resale value, but that is typically limited to the early AZL brass stuff.
All comments, experiences and opinions are welcome. Thanks for looking.
