I'm operating with a Digitrax Zephyr and love it. Slowly adding decoders to my fleet.

I might put DCC on my home layout when I build it but I've seen too many clubs have trouble with it (especially with wireless controls) at shows to use it there.

I'm about 50/50 on my locos using a Roco Z21 or the powercab at home. Have a switch to toggle between dc and dcc. Love the DCC but find something very satisfying controlling with DC controller cant really explain it.

Tommy, Welcome to the forum. Some quick answers for you: Whether you need a voltage reducer depends on your hardware. If you are running a 12V DCC system (I use the NCE Powercab) AND AZLs locomotives that take a drop-in decoder you're ok. Märklin, MTL and some older AZL locomotives are rated at a lower voltages and a voltage dropping unit (like Digitrax UP6Z) is useful although the general opinion is that they are ok with a 12V system. Märklin turnouts will support DCC. Very few Märklin locomotives are DCC ready and don't have much space inside for the DCC decoders, particularly the units you mention. However, there are always new products coming out. You might want to check what Velmo has to offer.

I am 99.9% dcc. I do keep a dc layout to test a new loco.
I don't use voltage reducer, and never lost a loco. Do use shortage protection.

is it possible in z to run dcc on dc I think with older decoders its possible The only decoder that will run dc well are the TCS decoders. The Digitrax decoders are awful in school.

I have a Digitrax Zephyr Xtra, but all my decoders are either TCS or NCE in Z. Unlike N, I am keeping up with buying decoders with my Z locos. :-)
