EMD SD45 – Southern Pacific:

For February, AZL is excited to followup last months SD45 release with the Southern Pacific version. The cab is specific to the SP and includes cab mounted lights and SP unique hood.

Thanks for the UP covered hoppers. Two questions though...
1. It mentions that the placard is add-on. Does this mean the buyer glues it on, or that AZL adds/glues it on?
2. The numbers on the cars are different from the numbers in the writeup...which are correct?

As an aside, I took the liberty to do a little quick research on these cars, so in case someone is looking for weathering ideas and so forth, here are some proto pics...

NOTE: None of these pics have the sugar placard. I was looking for later revs without the placard, but I didn't find any photos with the placard. I'm betting it's likely the placards didn't survive past the first major shop visit. (or promotional photo?) But still a cool feature, especially for those modeling the 70's.

Good to see prototypical details on the SP SD45! That's the way to go.
But sometimes I don't understand AZL philosophy: you guys are releasing exotic stuff like Johnstown America Autorack which has extreme limited use and sales potential, on the other hand you bash every roadname you can imagine on one style of coil car and one style of reefer. Why no diversification and correct variation/versions for those? You easily could have used some of the other autoracks and telling everyone they are Johnstowns?

Gerd, I think you'll find the answer has to do with the decision-makers not being "freight car guys". This is not unlike Micro-Trains is in N-Scale. (and I assume Z as well, I just don't have the history with MTL in Z yet) Micro-Trains isn't the only one, but they seem to get the most heat from their selection practices.

Combine that with general lack of info and a generally apathetic modelers, then what you see is the result. (Oh, and don't forget the need to amortize tooling) Frustrating, yes. But not every company is BLMA. (I don't think there is anyone comparable in Z...I suppose Intermountain might be the closest but with a very limited sample size of one freight car, and likely no more.)

You are right...the JA autorack is an anomaly...I bet it was a pet project versus being indicative of some change in philosophy at AZL. (do we know the JA is new tooling versus the older autoracks in sheep's clothing?)

The UP Sugar placards are already attached for you. The UP PS2-cd is not the only one with a placard applied. Take a look at the Great Northern and Union Equity PS2-cd hoppers that have been released in the last year. Here is the PS2 page link on the AZL site:

Now Gerd, you know if we had used one of the other auto racks and told everyone they were Johnstowns, you would be the first to call us out on that. Yes these are all new tooling. The fact is, the auto racks are truly different tooling. The bi-levels are indeed different than the tri-levels. Plus the side etchings are different depending on the logo placement. The Johnstowns are a great release since they are so different... plus we are showing our Canadian fans some love. But this is AZL... I think more will be clearer down the tracks... The SP SD45s are amazing. The light configuration is dead on with the prototypes. With lights above the cab windows, and on the hood, it is so much fun to watch run.

If you haven't heard, BLMA was sold to Athern. I am not sure if the BLMA philosophies will continue.

I stand corrected about the autoracks, sorry. I don't have any because they would only run on the prototype I model as a reroute and my layout probably isn't that conducive to 89ft cars anyway. Those "Canadian" cars look nice, and I forgot about the added benefit of AMTRAK!!! So those will complement the Superliner releases I'm sure.

I agree, those SP SD45's look awesome. Again not relevant for me but still neat to see. (A speed letter SD40M-2 might be in the cards eventually though!)

Actually I was about to ask about this since it seems to me that the loco requires some very clever light pipes to work with the standard lighting board and I wondered how well they will work with the DCC boards which have the LEDs aligned a bit differently.

Thanks Mark but I thought that most of AZL's locos where DCC convertible so I was wondering if "DCC ready" meant DCC equipped or something like that considering the price that they are being listed for.

We do NOT have any plans to do open auto racks, BUT...

It would make a great project for someone who wants to design a photo etched open auto rack to sit on top of our 89' flat cars.
