Hello, Everything is in the title. I'd like to install the front pilot on my 2 new GP7 (Denver and WP). It seems that the coupler is part of the truck...I cannot remove it. It is different from the old run of GP7 (UP) where I could make the exchange easily. Is there a tech tip on how to do it? Thank you Charlie

Is there a tech tip on how to do it? Unfortunately, the option is to leave the truck mounted coupler on or cut it off - that will allow you to install the pilot. You can always buy new trucks in case you want to switch back CJHAYES

Thanks for the reply. Ha... this is really a pity. I don't feel like cutting of any parts. A pair of truck is about 40$... I will see later back on the track which side to choose.

Check out the January/February 2015 issue of Ztrack. We have an article on how to instal the plows on the AZL SD70 series locomotive. The steps are very similar to installing the pilots on the GP7 and GP9 series. Here is a link to the back issues: www.ztrack.com/issues/issues_15.htmlRob

Hi there, Just digging up an old post I finally took some time to fix my problem with replacing the GP7 front pilot and exchange the coupler with MTL coupler. This is a first test that is very successful: I designed a pilot in which a MTL #905 coupler fit. With this actual version as shown below, I only need to reduce the length and angled sides of the coupler, then I simply insert it in the pilot. I've tested it without glue or screw and it works just fine. The pilot with coupler simply needs to be "clipped on" the GP7 body: NO glue, NO screw I'm now adjusting the pilot so you only need to reduce the length of the coupler body. Soon If you need some let me know! Charlie

Looks promising. Question, have you pulled a string of freight cars up a grade with this new pilot? If so, how many cars and what was the outcome? Additionally, I like to detail the pilots with BLMA parts. Is there a possibility to produce a generic pilot without details? It looks as if you made this with MU hoses like the AZL pilots.

Hi, Yes! still a few more small improvements to get it perfect! But so far that what it does: The GP7 cannot pull the following consist : 2 stocks with weight on it (total is 326g, that is approx 38 rolling stocks)..or very hardly with almost full power. Note that I cannot test yet a 38 cars consist as my layout isn't long enough for the moment..... :s soon! But with this test, the GP7 still moves a bit, and the pilot and coupler (without screw or glue) doesn't move at all, it remains attached and straight. About the generic pilot, yes I can make one, flat, no details on it. Send me a picture and I'll look at it. charlie
