Per request, we bring you the 'favorite AZL brass locomotive' release poll. For those of you who have only recently entered Z scale, you may be surprised to see the locomotives AZL has offered in brass over the years. Many of these are quite rare and do not come up very often on resale sites. Fortunately, a few of these brass runs are now available (E8/9s) or will be available as injection models (SD45s). So here is the poll!

Out of all the brass I have the challenger has been the most reliable. It pulls like a tank with the TT and was super easy to add DCC and sound. just keep it off small rad track and its a winner. big boy was a close second just doesn't run as smooth.

Rob,
I am assuming that the goal of this poll is to establish a count of who likes which prototype locomotive that AZL has created a brass model of and not the judging of the models themselves by those who might actually own one of these locos right?!

Mark weren't you the one requesting a poll for brass locomotives? Actually no goal at all. We just put up all of our brass releases to see which was most popular. It can be based on the run, or the prototype. It is just a for fun poll. But what is interesting is the no one has voted for the Big Boys. The Challengers are the leaders. I am surprised by this based on the popularity of the Big Boys.
And in case anyone is wondering, I voted for the SD45. I just loved these locomotives when they came out. I am still kicking myself for letting go of my Rio Grande SD45 to a Z scaler who was desperate to get one.... I do have a Southern high-nose version that I cherish.

The challenger got my vote even though I don't have one. Im looking forward to future releases. Hopefully it will be something I model!

One thing I may have made a mistake on. I really should have put the SD40T-2 as a separate locomotive. It was released with the SD40-2s, but the tunnel motors are distinct enough to be their own listing.

Rob Popular doesn't mean automatically impressed customers. I don't own the Challenger nor the Big Boy, but I had both in my hands for weathering and I must say the Challenger was in many aspects better quality

Rob, Both of your "what's your favorite" are tough for me. As I am not as big a fan of modern freight the car question is at one end of the spectrum. However, with the brass locomotive I have the opposite problem. There are many that are good(although the PA1s were not the best runners). But in answer to your question I would go with the Challenger or E7 AB. Don

Even if I don't plan to purchase any more, even when they're available as injected plastic models. Otherwise I'd voted for the F45, but my thought is biased as mine poorly runs... Dom

I just voted for the challenger. It is a beautiful loco, and it runs well too. I've had it run for an hour or more, and it does not even get warm. Handles curves and slow speeds very smoothly.

My vote is for the C44-9, because its the only modern GE, and they dominate the modern locomotive market this days.

Nice topic. I don't own one but the Southern High hood SD 45 was always so cool to see in pictures. Been wishing for a high in injection and might one day try to bash my own.

While I agree that the challenger runs nicely, there is in my experience no reason to put the GS3/GS4 second to the challenger due to differences in reliability. Especially the daylight engines in their beautiful colors reliably pull an 8 - 10 car (brass) train. For me the harmony between train and steam engine is extraordinary and AZL did create a masterpiece in Z with this consist. Reference is made: The colors were so striking against the California coastline that the train was often called the "Most Beautiful Train in the World". >>> www.spdaylight.net/Welcome.html !!! Best, Sven
