Great looking image. Since the Lark was a night train, not very many locations this image could come from: LA, SF, or Oakland, as twilight was the departure times in June. My reckoning suggests this is not San Francisco because there are hills to the west that would block the sunset. Probably not LA because of the hill in the upper right. But it does seem to fit the Oakland Lark, which that time of year could be as far south as our old friend Niles. What clenches it for me are the gulls in the sky. There were major garbage dumps west of the tracks in south Oakland and Niles. Like all your Niles images, it brings back memories. As for the Oakland Lark, it typically ran with the Lark observation car and 1 or 2 4-4-2 sleepers, to be united/separated with the Lark in San Jose. Interestingly, despite the Lark being dieselized, the Oakland Lark ran GS locomotives until 1957. One thought for the image: it would be nice to have the Lark insignia visible. Mark Hi Mark, What do you think, where could this be? Best, Sven PS: Years later it looked like this:

Sven, I’ve posted details in the passenger train thread about the Oakland Lark so I’ll just comment on the images here. Once again some great images. With the exception of the tall building on the right and the blue station, it’s a good approximation of Niles : discover.hubpages.com/travel/historic-niles-district-of-fremont-californiaRegarding the train, I believe the Oakland Lark was discontinued prior to the scarlet and silver paint scheme. The second set of images with the RPO, that would have to be the main Lark to San Francisco. For a location, it could be Redwood City or San Carlos. I’m afraid there just isn’t a real world location in Northern California where the Lark and Santa Fe would meet. The closest location is Stockton CA where the ATSF E-W line crosses the N-S SP line, where it could meet up with a San Joaquin Daylight. Santa Fe ran a passenger train into the Bay Area: the San Francisco Chief consisting of cars from the El Captain.
