To David : I am sorry for the German modellers that Viessmann gives and gave up (**Auslauf**) some kits and sets ... And it seems that the "haunted house" is no longer available, too (but You can modify ... as Vollmer did themselves) ! The Maitland house is not shown "haunted", the kit is of an absolutely realistic house that could really exist (I won't build it, because I don't use lasercuts) ... I realize you admitted this thread took a turn away from your original intention but let's speak facts and not to things we don't know ... The **auslauf** (no longer available) notation is not Viessmann doing something malicious to Z scalers ... The molds they inherited from Vollmer and Kibri are pushing 40 years in age. If you've been around plastic injections as I have you will realize that they are probably struggling to keep those molds sharp and in working order. Some are likely broken beyond repair and thus they cannot make those kits. About Vollmer 49679 I have no idea where you get your availability info but it is still readily available at Viessmann and I have 2 in stock ( link)). Screenshot of Viessmann page a few minutes ago: And limiting yourself to non laser cuts ... You will only be using 3D prints. Plastic molds that cost upwards of $50,000 per kit will not be employed again. The ROI takes way too long to recoup. Thanks for listening.

Errare humanum est. Sorry, I didn't see the "haunted house", in fact it was the first model among Vollmer's ... But many others are "Auslauf" ! And about 3D : some models by "Walt", especially several (groups of 3) city buildings (they fit the scale of Rokuhan's perfectly) and several others are really a bargain. And, fortunately, I bought all houses I needed BEFORE Shapeways prices went upwards !

I agree that 3D, injection and even brass have their place in modelling and enough everyone to try each once. But it's really the decision of the modeler as to their interests and skills (and time and wallet size) as to how the go.
As for injection molding I can believe a $50K price NRE for a kit 40 years ao. They would have been cut by precision tool makers. Back then I was paying that for a single 10K-shot mold. If you notice though many of the sprues in these kits are multi-purpose with several kits mold per color to improve ROI. Since then, tools makers have been replaced with CNC and most recently additive metal write. Since I'm not in that business any more, I don't keep up with the details, but I still get offers and there are companies that will do a mold plus up to 100 pieces for $1500.
And I agree this is drifting so back to sound....
I looked at a spook my niece has and there were no identifiable markings on the IC.
I'm liking the 2210 board the more I play with it (thanks RobA). With the right sound files you can get 2 separate audio channels out of it. I withdraw my volume comment. A bit of investigation finds that volume can be controlled down and up using a pulse on D0, D1 respectively on the breakout connector.
Sound good?
Mark
