Hi all! Not sure where to post this so point me in the right direction if I screwed up. I'm the new guy! I'm at first base and trying to plan my layout. I have an idea I've seen on line (see pic) Was wondering if anyone has an idea of what track and number of pieces would be needed for this? Using Micro-Track... it might not be exact and that's okay. If this is impossible is there a place I could look that would give me plan ideas and track needed using Micro-Track? Thanks!

Dickens,
Welcome to the group.
Looking at your plan, it would be useful to have some dimensions. If I assume each grid is 1 foot, you'll actually have to do some stretching to fill that space with the MTL sectional track. If you want to keep faithful to the plane, the layout would be more like 3x5 feet. Also, the over/under tracks might be an issue for clearance. Once we have some dimensions, more specific suggestions can be made.
It's a nice looking design. Is this perhaps from a Model Railroader design?

Hi Dickens, Also a warm welcome from me! Take a look here if that comes close to what you want to built in Z? www.wymann.info/1to220/Inspiration.htmlHi Mark, This is the "Grey River" layout plan in HO from David K. Smith; davidksmith.com/track-planning/plan_17.htmThus you need to scale it to Z. But A.T. Wymann has done most of the work already (see Wymann info link) A very interesting plan! Eager to learn how you solve that, Mark Best, Sven

Eager to learn how you solve that, Mark Best, Sven Sven, Thanks for the Links. Interestingly, I've got two one-off Z scale prototype 70's buildings that DKS built. I understand he's not doing much of that these day (at least in Zscale). I am an admirer of his work. I've tried to reach out to him in the past but it wasn't a good time . It's kind of neat to see his "Z" track plans I've got multiples of all the townbuider (his too). Coal mine, steel mill and auto assembly plant are my only industrial requirements. I like running passenger (long trains) traffic. That's why AZL keeps us (me) so broke! BTW: Dickens: Welcome from me too!

Thanks for your help Mark and Sven. It's going to be very small, 2X4, as I don't have much room in my house. If the plan in mind won't work I'm up for suggestions. If I had a model track company, I'd have plans (with what track and number of each) for modeler's to use. Is there one? I haven't seen it if it's out there for Micro-Track. I can't bake a banana muffin without a recipe. Anyway, this is the thing that has stalled my progress. I did look at the Wymann site (which is where I saw this layout) and although interesting didn't tell me what I needed to know.

Ken, I've been looking at the plan. It is doable, but not simply. There are two makers of sectional track for Z: Micro Trains and Rokuhan. The physical layout of the track differs between the two in size and spacing of the railroad ties. Micro Trains (MTL) matches the U.S. standard and Rokuhan the Japanese. Rokuhan has a larger selection track and publishes a number of sample layouts: www.rokuhan.com/english/layout/index.phpPlan O on this page is the closest to the design you're looking with the over and under and can be easily enhanced. The maker of track up to your preference. When looking at the Rokuhan plans, many can be done in MTL just be aware that the MTL track selection is limited to L110, L220, R195, R220 and R490 and turnouts. Also in general you'll want to avoid using curve smaller than R195. Give it some thought, Mark

Ken It appears the list of track needed (including any pieces that needed to be cut) for this plan was once posted, but is no longer online... www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=22870.0

Ken, Thanks for posting that link! That was around the time he quit z scale and shut down the company NZT. His running mate Chris Schmuk was posting there, too. Chris did some unbelievable work in z scale. I doubt any of the Railwire crew does z scale today. All that talent... What a shame!
Post more of your progress. Maybe someone will get back involved in z.

Did some digging and found this - not my own work but probably as close as you an get to DKS's original parts list.
