Willy, You've discovered for CN what I find so interresting with Mikados: They all were customized based on road and need. I'm guessing that CN had few if any of the USRA Mikados, but I'll bet they had a number of classes that are real close. I model the WP, which had 5 classes of Mikados and a number of different tenders. They ran Mikados on coal in one division and oil in the other. Many, but not all had preheat tanks. Bells were mounted on the front of smoke box or boiler. While the fine details of AZLs Mikados may not match all the prototypes, I can build a fleet of Mikados with the visually distinctive details I mentioned. I would suspect the CN marking may also be related to the assignment. WP used a slightly different nose art on their diesels based on whether the engine was used for passenger or freight service. Good luck on your research. In my research of the WP, I've found a lot of variations in details and some really interest cars (including a former CN steam generator car).

All, I've been looking around the AZL site and related sites, and haven't run across a description of the motor used in the Mikados, yet I have a vague memory of one. Any good direction to go?

Looks like a version of the 7.5mm can motor AZL has used in recent offerings Correct. Specifications are very similar to Faulhaber 0816 motor, with the following exceptions: Max Voltage is 12VDC, and outside case is 7.5mm (Faulhaber is 8mm) It is a proprietary motor available only to AZL; however, we are always exploring new motor options as the manufacturing technology has been improving dramatically over the past few years in this sector. I would expect that the motor will get an upgrade / refresh in the next 2 years.

Rob, Thanks for the info. I'm trying my hand at writing a review of the Mikados, and wanted to get the motor info right.

I recently received my first AZL PRR Mikado: #9630, a few days ago and am curious to know if anyone else out here has a bit of poor craftsmanship on the front end? On my unit, the front number plate on the nose is crooked & marred, and the side-frame step on the right side was loose and crooked as well...it was not sitting level with the frame/body up front. *Reference pictures below* If anybody has a fix for straightening out the plate marker, please reply.

Is it possible to put DCC in the Mikado? Has anyone tried and succeeded? Can you post photos if possible?

Is it possible to put DCC in the Mikado? Has anyone tried and succeeded? Can you post photos if possible? Tim Yes it is possible. Yes a lot of people have succeeded. The CT elektronik DCX742D, or the CT DCX76zD decoders fit. If you can find one.(Not sold in the USA) The Doehler & Haass PD05A-3 Decoders fit just fine. The ESU LokPiolot 5 Micro will work but it's a tight fit. The TCS Z2, the Digitrax DZ126T and a few other nano/micro sized decoders can be made to fit but its a tighter fit. There is a thread on TrainBoard with pictures and instructions. www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?threads/azl-mikado-first-impressions-dccd.71864/

I salvaged a broke Mikado from ebay and finally got it to run. Those tiny mechanisms working in unison are sweet. Wish I had gotten one earlier when they came out. Tim

NOTE: ! “Mind the Drive Shaft” !
The irreplaceable drive shaft ‘coupling’ the tender can easily snapped, either in the length ot the universal joint. When in the plastic carrier, study it. You need to pull them apart, straight away. When you pick both loco & tender: 2 hands and focus as you move. Same when putting the shaft back in.
