Howdy! New to the forum, finally getting my Noch "Cortina" layout going. After installing the track the hard way, i see I will need to have a removable mountain to access the track. Tips, techniques on this? I'm pretty, uh, unskilled and don't want to ruin my layout! Thanks

Thanks Paul. Appreciate your interest in z scale. Seems the mountain top comes shipped temporarily glued down. I remember running a razor around a visible seam and it popped off. It was a cool layout, as I do remember. Also, I believe Z Scale Hobo is directly selling Noch. His site likely has other info. Anyway, good luck with your new toy!

Noch 85880 Cortina Mountain Removal would have gotten my attention a bit faster! Use a razor blade to cut the "hot glue" and remove the mountaintops. Below is a snippet from z.scale.hobo's world-wide exclusive ENGLISH version (I translated it) of the Noch Cortina track plan ... this snip shows the mountain removal.

Silbertal's (Noch 84900) mountains are not removable.

Yep, just found that out. So should I leave it alone or make it removeable? Is this going to drive me crazy once I start operating?

I definitely would NOT cut it. I think there's a ledge underneath to allow access from the bottom. That layout has been discontinued for 10 years now, so my memory is foggy.
Why do you need to get into the tunnel area?
* Tunnel access for track installation ... Just put some double sided adhesive once you've figured out which sections go into the tunnel ... cluster several sections that span the entire tunnel. Set them into place by putting one end into the tunnel. Find the lead at the other end and then fasten to the rest of the track. Use a padded screwdriver to press the areas where you might have placed some double-sided tape to ensure that the track is pressed firmly down onto the particle board insert that Noch provided.
Before setting tracks into the tunnels, I would also make sure that all joints are secure ... as in deform each joiner at the joint in all four locations around the track joint. 8 total for each 2-rail joint. Press the joiner down onto the rail to ensure smooth contact.
* Tunnel access for cleaning, use a telescoping tool to push pads (non abrasive) onto the tracks and to keep them clean.
* Tunnel access for derailments, either use the previously mentioned possible underside access or fish out the locomotives with padded chopsticks or your hands.

Yep, just found that out. So should I leave it alone or make it removeable? Is this going to drive me crazy once I start operating? Found some REALLY old photos on my site (2001) ... There's really no way to cut this without undermining the loop going above the tunnel area. I don't have any images of the underside, but looking at the 6 photos I do have on my site, I feel more confident that there is access from underneath.

yep agreed. I got the layout on ebay really cheap. I already installed the track underneath and seems to work fine, just hope its not too much of a pain when I start operating. There is a small access underneath. Now can I wire this with 2 block sections and automatic switching? Hmmmm...
