Alberich,
The railroad you're looking at, the East Broad Top, was a corporate coal line. Generally mining and logging operations built tunnels and bridges on the assumption that they would be temporary. That said, I'm aware of several tunnels in use today that are just blasted out holes. They make the most sense when the geology is a large granite monolith too big to remove and too hard to go around. As I've mention before the timber portal were generally of a earlier era, but what about the timber forms for a soon to be cast concrete portal? The SP image above shows the limber lines quite well for an example.
Regarding the tower, it may be too late, but have you given any thought to lighting it?
Mark

Thanks Mark but, concerning lighting, no structure will be enlightened, even the houses, and the signals will all be dummy : it will be a pure "daylight" layout. I remember the several hundred meters of wires at my former layout (and all the IC's to control the signals), and I don't wanna build the same thing ... And, all the way, the Budd's don't have any "light" inside, it would look silly to run them "dark". Yes, I know, it would be possible to add light with thin PCB's and SMD Led's, excepted for the middle part where the motor is ... No, Niet, Non, Nein !

Before anybody makes a reference to Scanrail's idea in this topic : I have already read it, I say : very fine ... for guys with DCC, but I go on, NO again ! NO to DCC, NO to light(s) on my layout ... And for signals, I don't wanna build a "gaseous plant" (all the way, I don't understand the US signalling rules). I did it once, almost 40 years ago with the "Deutsche Bundesbahn"'s rules : never again !
