I do have to be honest, I want to rust the heck out of the Azl 2 bay chessie hopper I have, but I feel that's believeable. Definitely believable! You want examples? That's a car I would eventually love to do if I decide to stay in Z-scale later on down the line. Too many other projects already, as of now.

Wow, I don’t think I”ve ever seen anyone tackle the learning curve quite like you have. I need to be taking tips from YOU now. I do have to be honest, I want to rust the heck out of the Azl 2 bay chessie hopper I have, but I feel that's believeable. I Googled Chessie 2-bay hoppers. Lot of photos of these cars still in service and rusted heavily! See this page for some examples. I also included a few image links: hiveminer.com/Tags/chessie%2ChopperRob

Weathering looks so good a real! I'll definitely do it on my structures ...but I have to admit I'm a bit "afraid" to do so on my locos! I have special weathering powders (rust, earth colors, black oil/coal etc) but I haven't tried yet. I don"t know if it can be removed easily if needed... :s

Challenge accepted! Going to dullcote my chessie hopper tonight... Again. Don't think I shook it enough and it came out sorta shiney. Great picture examples. I'm going to try a weather and patch. My decal paper comes tomorrow.

I'm a great believer in weathering where appropriate but I'm also not afraid to go for a gloss finish.
I quite like the contrast that way. certain things really benefit from weathering like the AZL 60ft high cubes but I always try to do them to different degrees to ring the changes

Now I'm just scratching my head for the best free software to design the patch to print on waterslide paper. Any recommendations? Let me know ow what you think of the car. Attachments:

Inkscape (vector graphics app) or Google Docs would be my suggestion.
One alternative for future reference....you could have removed the reporting marks and masked the yellow square area prior to weathering. Then 1/2 or 3/4 through weathering peel it off, apply the reporting marks (black or dark blue?) via inkjet and transparent decal paper, then finish weathering.

Why would I do something like that, it makes too much sense! Ha! Great Idea. I should be able to work something into this car. However I tell you I am having a heck of a time with the dullcote. On my coal Porter's it left shiny streaks in the centers of the ribsides that powder would not stick too. Had to glosscoat it to start over. On my other cars it still leaves what I would call a satin finish, not flat. Shook the heck out of it, warmed it, tried ultra fine coats to the point I got splotches. Tried a new can also. Sprayed inside as well. I'm about to give up on it to be honest. Thanks for the recommendation and complement btw.

I tested Inkscape one year ago and found it very slow, despite of the fact that I have a rather "good" desktop (not gamer ... ) computer, 2 years old (i5 at 3.2 GHz, 16 G of RAM, SSD and W7 64 bits pro). Try " PhotoFiltre", it is a french Freeware/Shareware, a bitmap editor a little bit like Photoshop, 3 years old ; the most important functions are accessible in the freeware version, and it exists in English, too. With the correct parameters it can produce "blurring" lines, like real graffitis (notice that it does it always if You cut a circular zone).

Well it's been a while but finally got around to tinkering with decal paper and whatnot. Had some bleeding issues. I'm not 100% happy but not disappointed either. Should look better once dullcote and alittle bit of weathering applied and I think I can trim the bleeding edge once the decal is dry. Thanks for all of the advice so far.
