YES - you can now model a COMPLETE Amtrak(R) Autotrain!
Here are the suggested part numbers and combinations.
A typical prototypical Autotrain ran with the following:
Two P42 Locomotives (In the 800 series road numbers - these were P40DC locmotives that were upgraded to P42 status under the TIGER stimulus program. They frequently haul the Autotrain.) Two Dining cars – these are at the head of the train and serve the coach passengers. Only one kitchen is used, the other car is for seating only. Four Coaches Lounge Car – Autotrain uses its own unique lounge car. From the outside, it looks more like a Dining car. Four Sleepers Two All Bedroom Sleepers – unique to Autotrain One Dining Car – for sleeper passengers. Up to 24 Auto Carriers.
With the release of our Autotrain auto carrier cars, you can now make a complete Autotrain yourself! We suggest the following to make that dream come true:
For a SHORT Autotrain: 63502-5 Amtrak - AutoTrain assigned GE P42 Genesis 818 Phase V 72053-1 Amtrak Superliner set (Sleeper/Diner/Coach/Coach) 904100-1 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks) Assemble as: P42/Diner/Coach/Coach/Sleeper/Auto Carrier/Auto Carrier/Auto Carrier/Auto Carrier
For a MEDIUM Autotrain: 63502-5 Amtrak - AutoTrain assigned GE P42 Genesis 818 Phase V 63502-6 Amtrak - AutoTrain assigned GE P42 Genesis 835 Phase V 72053-2 Amtrak Superliner set (Sleeper/Diner/Coach/Coach) 72006-3 Amtrak Superliner Sleeper 72007-1 Amtrak Superliner Diner 72008-1 Amtrak Superliner Lounge 904100-2 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks) 904100-4 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks with “Skip I-95” branding) Assemble as: P42/P42/Diner/Coach/Coach/Lounge/Sleeper/Sleeper/Diner/Auto Carrier x8
For a LONG Autotrain: 63502-5 Amtrak - AutoTrain assigned GE P42 Genesis 818 Phase V 63502-6 Amtrak - AutoTrain assigned GE P42 Genesis 835 Phase V 72053-1 Amtrak Superliner set (Sleeper/Diner/Coach/Coach) 72053-2 Amtrak Superliner set (Sleeper/Diner/Coach/Coach) 72006-1 Amtrak Superliner Sleeper 72006-2 Amtrak Superliner Sleeper 72006-3 Amtrak Superliner Sleeper 72007-1 Amtrak Superliner Diner 72008-1 Amtrak Superliner Lounge 904100-1 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks) 904100-2 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks) 904100-3 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks with “Skip I-95” branding) 904100-4 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks with “Skip I-95” branding) Assemble as: P42/P42/Diner/Diner/Coach/Coach/Coach/Coach/Lounge/Sleeper/Sleeper/Sleeper/ Sleeper/Sleeper/Diner/Auto Carrier x16
For a PROTOTYPE Autotrain: 63502-5 Amtrak - AutoTrain assigned GE P42 Genesis 818 Phase V 63502-6 Amtrak - AutoTrain assigned GE P42 Genesis 835 Phase V 72053-1 Amtrak Superliner set (Sleeper/Diner/Coach/Coach) 72053-2 Amtrak Superliner set (Sleeper/Diner/Coach/Coach) 72006-1 Amtrak Superliner Sleeper (Two of these) 72006-2 Amtrak Superliner Sleeper 72006-3 Amtrak Superliner Sleeper (Two of these) 72007-1 Amtrak Superliner Diner (Two of these) 904100-1 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks) 904100-2 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks) 904100-3 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks with “Skip I-95” branding) 904100-4 Amtrak Auto Carrier Set (Four Auto Racks with “Skip I-95” branding) Plus one repeated Auto Carrier set – any of above 4 part numbers will do. Assemble as: P42/P42/Diner x2/Coach x4/Diner/Sleeper x7/Diner/Auto Carrier x20

Thank you, Rob, That was extremely helpful. Just one more question if I may. In your video the two (unmodified?) P42s pull 16 coaches and 11 auto carrier, Your long version is 13/16, thus I assume two P42 can do the job, too. But in the prototypical version it is 15/20 - third engine necessary? Best, Sven

@ Rob A: I have a little problem here with my train. I have two P42s - when I attach more than 11 cars my P42s start to de-rail. As you can see, it is always the inner wheel that is the problem. Neither the radius of the curves nor the tracks seem to be the problem, since with 10 cars the train runs smoothly. Any idea? Best, Sven

Sven, look at rail joints. It may not be perfectly straight. There may also be a hump near it. It also could be curve too tight at one spot. Locomotives are great to see imperfect track, because they will climb over it. Watch where the loco details, and that’s where the problem is.

Have you try running a different loco on the front. It can be a case the back loco pushing or pulling that causes the problem. See if there’s a speed differential between the two locos.

Have you tried swapping the two locos?

Rob, y'all have done a great job making that Amtrak engine look good. I'm sorry, but in reality that's one ugly engine! Looks like a shoe box on wheels. Oh for those Art Deco days...
